Introduction

Introduction

Storytelling, in today's marketing, is a valuable asset for all companies, which often use digital to develop a narrative structure around the brand, and the products or services they sell.
Digital storytelling is the practice of using new technologies to tell stories, seeking to create value through the mechanisms of storytelling.

What’s Digital Storytelling?

The expression Digital Storytelling is made up of two words: digital and storytelling. So to understand what digital storytelling is, let us start with the second word.

Storytelling is the use of narrative procedures in order to convey a message.

What about digital? Digital Storytelling is realised with digital tools, which can be video, audio, images, text, or maps.

Digital Storytelling consists of organising multimedia content into a coherent system, governed by a narrative structure, in order to obtain a narrative consisting of multiple elements.

This expression is commonly used to refer to the practice of storytelling using new technologies, new media, modern tools, to implement strategies that aim to engage the consumer, making him or her passionate about a story, and therefore a product or service

Why Digital Storytelling?

Using digital storytelling in marketing exemplifies how powerful a brand can be without the old-fashioned advertising technique of shoving a product in potential customers face and hoping they respond positively. We go and buy that thing because we are buying a lifestyle, an aesthetic, and a story.

Digital storytelling projects are functional because you understand with further depth than traditional storytelling, that you and your enterprise can be a great strength.

Different means of Digital Storytelling

In its simplest form, digital storytelling refers to the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories or present ideas, often through social media platforms.

As opposed to traditional storytelling that uses materials on physical media such as paper, tapes or discs, and film, a digital story uses material that exists on electronic files:

Text
 Images
Video
Audio
Interactive elements like maps
Social media elements like tweets

The Elements of an Effective Digital Story

Point of view

There are certain elements that must be considered in the making of a digital story. These elements can be used as a starting point for the whole process. A digital story allows a writer to experience personal expression. Addressing the point of view of a digital story also defines specific concepts that the author wants the audience to realize.

Emotional content

Effective digital stories stir an emotional reaction from the audience. A story that involves fundamental emotional paradigms will stake a claim on our hearts. Digital stories that deal with these issues are more likely to hold an audience’s attention and can help authors establish a connection with the audience. People tend to go out of their way to support others who are willing to tell emotionally charged stories.

Recording one’s voice

A recorded voice can add nuance to a digital story and make it more personal. A voice can convey meaning and intent in a very personal way.

Economy

Creators of digital stories also have to be economical in their use of text, dialogue, and visuals. Digital storytelling is principally a visual medium, and storytelling with images means properly using the juxtaposition of language and images to create a narrative.
Due to the practice of economy, most digital stories tend to be short. Limiting the scope of a digital story offers two benefits: the practice makes the story creation process more manageable and it requires the writer to focus only on the essential elements of the story.

Pacing

Storytellers must be able to pull a story back or move it forward when needed. In some cases, improving a digital story’s pacing requires deciding which parts of the story can be omitted. There are a number of visual and audio effects that can help establish a digital story’s pacing. Quick visual effects and upbeat music, for instance, suggest urgency and excitement. Meanwhile, slower music can suggest drama and contemplation.

Soundtrack

A soundtrack can greatly enhance and underscore a digital story, adding complexity and depth to the narrative.

Other Elements of a Digital Story

Engagement opportunities. A good digital story allows viewers to interact through a number of engagement opportunities (ex.: sharing information through social media, sharing comments, subscribing to podcasts, contributing content).

Technical structure and organized content. Technical tools that can contribute to an effective digital story include a customized content management system, collaboration tools, and an analytics framework for measuring audience behavior.

Visual design. Digital stories should encourage easier reading as well. This is achieved through the use of clear space and the careful selection of fonts and type size.

Social Media and Digital Storytelling

Transmedia storytelling

The human attention span is at an all-time low.
With so little time spent by viewers on each piece of content, digital storytellers have
only a few seconds to get their story across to their target audience.

The good news is that with digital stories and the digital literacy of your audience, you don't need to tell your whole story all at once. Social media allows you to weave digital narratives across multiple platforms, a method called transmedia storytelling.

Transmedia storytelling helps develop your brand personality as a full character. You want to be able to show different sides of your brand on different social media channels.

Know your audience

The population that makes up your target audience is not all alike. People are attracted to messages for different reasons, motivations and needs.

Audience segmentation is important. If you take a look at the different segments that make up your target audience and what resonates with those different groups, you can cater marketing messages to the most profitable segments and make sure no important groups are being left out of your marketing efforts.

Once marketers understand the different segments of their audience, they can use it to make optimal decisions regarding advertising, marketing, and content creation.

Tips on Creating an Effective Digital Story

Tips on Creating an Effective Digital Story

Start with the right idea and scope. Think small. It is best to focus on one type of story; this can prevent creators from being caught in conveying all the aspects of someone’s life, for instance. Ideally, the output will be a three to five-minute work that reveals a small, personal truth.

Less is more when it comes to visual effects. Creators should keep in mind that effects should serve to enhance the story. The overuse of visual effects such as transitions and panning effects can distract from the narrative and the story itself.
